Proving it’s never too late to find happiness in life, Southold-based singer-songwriter Robert Bruey is blazing his own musical path—one that is leading him into listening rooms and living rooms all over the North Fork and beyond.

The now 48-year-old first picked up a guitar at the age of 32 and before long he had taught himself to play. He soon made the jump from strumming at home to performing Van Morrison and John Mayer covers during open-mic nights at Martha Clara Vineyards.

Then came the step that transformed Bruey from a hobbyist into an artist. Hearing others belt out original verses inspired him to write his own music.

“I heard people performing their own songs and I felt out of place singing covers,” he said. “It kind of crept up on me.”

Today, Bruey has written more than 100 songs and has two albums under his belt with one more slated to come out in March 2014.

Influenced by artists such as Dave Matthews, Johnny Cash, Damien Rice and Waylon Jennings, Bruey’s style has been described as “honest and real, raw and meaningful and gritty.” Bruey admits his process is mysterious, even to him. “It all comes from mood,” he said.

He said much of his inspiration comes from his childhood growing up in rural Maine. He claims many of his lyrics simply just come to him and often reflect hard times in his life and his family, as is the case with his latest song “Fracture of a Sign,” which is about his brother.

Bruey settled in Southold in 2009 with his wife, Dana, a children’s educator at the local library. He performs regularly around the North Fork as well as venues up-island, including the Great South Bay Music Festival, and all over the tri-state area.

He is currently working to raise money for his next CD, which has yet to be titled, with two-time Grammy award winner Cynthia Daniels. For a $50 donation fans receive a personally signed CD, a drawing for a chance at a Robert Bruey concert in their home and entrance to the official full band CD release party. Best of all, 10% of all proceeds go to Maureen’s Haven Homeless Outreach Program. Enter by clicking here.
