Wine region, schmine region. It’s fall and craft beer is taking center stage on the North Fork.

Case in point: Long Ireland Beer Company’s Wet Hop Release & Hop Farm Benefit tonight (Friday Sept. 20)– an event that celebrates local farming, businesses and, of course, brews.

Wet hops are the biggest trend in craft beer. Its unique taste is derived from hops that are  fresh, not dried. The hops much be used immediately following harvest, as in within 24 hours. This means brewers much find hops farms in their own backyards.

To brew this time-sensitive beer, local breweries Long Ireland Beer Company and Greenport Harbor Brewing Company have teamed up with Wading River farmer John Condzella (Condzella’s Farms) and Peconic farmer Justin Wesnofske (Wesnofske Farms). The brewers are donating the beer and all the money raised from sales will go directly back to the two farms.

Try out the results for yourself during the Wet Hop Release & Hop Farm Benefit this Friday Sept. 20 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Long Ireland Brewery, 817 Pulaski St.  Riverhead.

If you can’t make the wet hops release party, Long Ireland has another cool annual celebration tomorrow Saturday Sept. 21: Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day Party from 1-6pm.
