The Mattituck Yacht Club will host its annual Sunfish Derby on Friday August 2.

As they have done each August for more than 60 years, sailors from across eastern Long Island will come together at the derby to race sailboats on Great Peconic Bay.

The brightly colored Sunfish will be able to be seen racing from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. from the beach at the yacht club as well as from most bay beaches in Mattituck.

Both Sunfish and Laser sailboat fleets will be racing in the Sunfish Derby sailing regatta.

The junior class, which includes youngsters ages 8 to 12, will race in the morning. The youth (13 to 18 years old) and the seniors (19 and older) will race in the afternoon. Awards will be given to the top five finishers in each class.

To sign up to race, go to www.pgjsa.org.

The Mattituck Yacht Club was started in 1910 and has been operated continuously for 103 years. The club’s goal is to promote interest in sailing, seamanship and sportsmanship through educational and social programs for members. Sailing programs are held daily throughout the summer in which children learn to rig and sail sailboats, tie knots, and learn water safety.
