What better backdrop to rekindle a romance than a quaint private  house near the beautiful Long Island Sound?

Lana Tamaro, who has been a therapist for over 20 years and owns her own private practice (Couples Counseling Corner) in Rockville Centre, runs weekend couple’s retreats on the picturesque Orient Point all year round.

The weekend retreat package includes three days and two nights in a house for only the couple to enjoy, a bountiful breakfast each morning with fresh local ingredients, therapeutic sessions, and a copy of Sue Johnson’s Book, “Hold Me Tight.”

Couples can customize their weekend retreat workshop by choosing topics for their counseling sessions to focus on. Choices include discussing difficult topics, deepening romantic connections, improving communication, reconnecting emotionally, building trust again, and premarital counseling.

“There’s nine hours of therapy over the three days, but it’s not just talking and talking,” Ms. Tamaro explained while describing the program. “We make it fun with activities and bonding experiences—it’s more like team-building because each couple is really a team. I give them tools that they can take home with them and incorporate into their everyday life.”

A typical couple’s weekend begins on Friday evening with guests arriving at the private house around 4 p.m. where they are greeted with a serving of English tea. At 5 p.m. the couple’s custom weekend will be reviewed and then at 5:30 they will have their first session. After that the rest of the evening is free for visitors to go out to dinner and explore the surrounding seaside towns.

On Saturday morning the couple wakes to a delicious 8 a.m. breakfast, which is followed by the second counseling session. At noon the guests have free time for daytime activities like kayaking or walking along the beach. The third counseling session is at 4 p.m., and after that is another chance to go out to eat and visit the village of Greenport.

Sunday includes another continental breakfast, the fifth and last session, and then the retreat is completed.

“The weekends are aimed at couples who are not in crisis—for ones who have a healthy relationship but just want to tweak it a bit,” Ms. Tamaro added. “Maybe they want to add some intimacy or reconnect in a certain way. They should be happy, but just want to be a little happier.”

Ms. Tamaro is very experienced, as she is a NYS Licensed Mental Health Counselor, National Certified Counselor and a Board Certified Coach specializing in couple’s therapy. She is also a professor for graduate students majoring in Mental Health Counseling at Pace University.

If this weekend away sounds appealing to you but you’re not in a relationship or would rather go with a group of friends, Ms. Tamaro also offers girlfriend weekend retreats. The women retreats can be customized to improve friendship bonds, develop personal understanding and create memories.
