Movie stars have the Oscars, Broadway thespians have the Tonys, and high school theater students from eastern Long Island have the Teenys. The 11th Annual Teeny Awards are taking place Sunday  (June 9) at 3 p.m. at Southold High School. And the students even get a red carpet.

There are 17 high schools eligible for Teeny nominations. Throughout the year, the drama, comedy and musical productions the schools put on are judged and a list of nominees is released in early May.

Like other theater awards, the categories for nominees include lead and supporting actor and actress roles in musicals, dramas and comedies. There are also awards for outstanding performance, judges’ choice, choreography, outstanding ensemble and playbill/poster art.

At the event, the high school actors will perform scenes and/or musical numbers from their productions in between the announcements of the award winners. The trophies will be presented to winners by esteemed community members, theater professionals and arts supporters.

The ceremony will be hosted by award-winning broadcaster, producer, host and interviewer Bonnie Grice.

The Teeny Awards Ceremony is completely open to the public. Tickets can be purchased in advance on the East End Arts’ website for $20 for adults and $15 for students.  On the day of at the door they cost $25 for adults and $20 for students.
