The North Fork has a sleek new winery – and this one comes with a view of the water.

Kontokosta Winery quietly opened its doors to the public Wednesday morning in Greenport. The 9,000 square feet winery on North Road, which is owned by brothers Michael and Constantine Kontokosta, overlooks the bluff of Long Island Sound.

A modern interpretation of a 19th century New England barn, the winery is made of 90 percent recycled-content steel and boasts floor-to-ceiling windows and exposed steel beams. Exposed steel beams lend an industrial feel to the tasting room while copper tables provide a sense of bucolic refinery.

The property’s 23 acres of vineyards have been producing wine since 2006. Varietals include Riesling, sauvignon blanc, Viognier, cabernet franc, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and Syrah.

“The farm produces beautiful fruit that has made some beautiful wines,” Michael Kontokosta said in a January interview with Newsday.

Gilles Martin, the esteemed local winemaker at Southold’s Sparkling Pointe Vineyard, has signed on as Kontokosta’s consulting winemaker.

Kontokosta Winery is located at 825 North Road (Route 25) in Greenport and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 631-477-6977 or go to www.kontokostawinery.com.
