The Peconic Landing retirement community’s permanent outdoor sculpture garden has a new summer exhibit called “The Rest is Art: A Celebration of the Bench as an Art Form,” and it’s bound to make you rethink where you sit to rest your weary legs.

The exhibit features artists from around the world whose pieces, artistically designed benches, were chosen by members of the Peconic Landing Resident Art Committee. Seven benches from six artists were picked to be on display in the garden, which is on the grounds of the historic Brecknock Hall.

In addition to the selected professional artists, benches created by Mattituck High School students will also be exhibited. The students designed benches using snowboards during their art class and applied to be included in the show. Six student benches were selected.

A gala to celebrate the opening of the exhibition will take place this Sunday, June 30 at 4 p.m. on the garden grounds.

Besides the benches, there are 11 other sculptures by artists who participated in past exhibits. Most of the artists will be on hand to meet with guests and talk about their work.

There will be refreshments and also live music from saxophone quartet Quattraphonium from the Atlantic Wind Symphony. The event is free and open to all but reservations are a must. To make one call (631) 477-BLUE.

Peconic Landing is located at 1500 Brecknock Road in Greenport and the sculpture garden is on the grounds of Brecknock Hall on property.
