Greenport Memorial Day Carnival

The sweet smell of cotton candy in the air at Greenport’s annual Memorial Day carnival is a sure sign the of start of summer is upon the North Fork.

The five-day event featuring games, rides and, of course, tons of crave-worthy treats draws hundreds of locals and visitors alike each year. For a pay-one-price ticket carnival goers will enjoy favorites like the tilt-a-whirl, a Ferris wheel and endless rows of arcade games.

The carnival’s featured event is a fireworks show scheduled for 10 p.m. on Sunday, May 26. While the display can be viewed clearly from any area in the village locals know to arrive early to score the best spot at the fair grounds.

The carnival is a fundraiser for Greenport Fire Department’s Star Hose company. In the past, the proceeds have gone toward the creation of Larry Tuthill Park, located in the village near the Shelter Island Ferry terminal.

The festivities kick off Thursday, May 23 at the Polo Grounds on Moores Lane in Greenport and will run through Memorial Day, May 27. The rain date for the fireworks is May 27 at 10 p.m.
