It’s February on the North Fork. At times it can feel like the whole East End is riding out the winter on the warm shores of Waikiki, but there are many business owners who stay behind to feed the hungry masses.

Here are a handful of eateries serving lunch to locals and midweek visitors all winter long.

As clichéd as might sound, Linh Trieu admitted, Sept. 11 prompted her to reassess her life’s direction. Specifically, she said, the terrorist attacks made her realize she no longer wanted to work as a web designer for Bloomberg in Manhattan, where she had spent the past four years.

“I always wanted to cook,” the 39-year-old said during a recent interview at Wednesday’s Table, the Southold café she co-owns with sister Lena Tanzi. “So at that point I was like, you know what? I’m gonna do it. Screw it. Life’s too short.” (more…)

After waiting on long lines outside big box stores and circling parking lots three or four times trying to find a decent spot during the Black Friday craziness, it’s time to  your support for local small business owners and their goods.

Tomorrow Nov. 28 is Small Business Saturday, a day  when local businesses from Riverhead to Orient (and across the country) are offering special deals and discounts.

Has anyone else noticed that over the past couple years braised short rib is suddenly popping up on a lot of menus? It’s easily one of the seven best things to happen to my taste buds this millennium.  (more…)

If you’re struggling to find a place to eat lunch on any given Wednesday on the North Fork, a new café named Wednesday’s Table might sound like a pretty good option.

But unlike most local breakfast-and-lunch spots — which are closed Monday or Tuesday, if at all — you won’t find Wednesday’s Table open on the day of the week it’s named for. (more…)
