They say that if you build a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to your door. But as the popularity of raising backyard chickens continues to grow, many North Forkers are opting to build their own chicken coops or hen houses — either from scratch or repurposed materials. Here are four decidedly one-of-a-kind examples:

Eight years ago, Matt and Marilyn Pasierb of East Marion launched North Fork Egg Farm with 35 free-range hens. Today, the Southold operation is home to 450.  (more…)

The first full week of summer has flown by and the North Fork is all abuzz. So stop and take time to look around at what summer has to offer in between the sounds of sizzling barbecue grills and the jingle of the Mister Softee truck coming down the block.

Cabernet franc spotted  April 25 at Shinn Estate Vineyards.

Bud break began on the North Fork last week with cabernet franc vines peaking through April 21 at Shinn Estate Vineyards in Mattituck.

Though that date is somewhat earlier than average — North Fork buds generally break around the first week of May — April 21 is by no means unusual. The earliest bud break at Shinn took place on April 15 in 2010 and 2002, co-owner David Page told us last year.
