You could argue the region’s best wines — both from a fan perspective and that of a wine critic — are grown by Richie Pisacano.

It’s in part because Pisacano, vineyard manger at Wölffer Estate Vineyard and co-owner of Roanoke Vineyards in Riverhead, has the benefit of 40 years’ experience in an industry that is just four years older than that.

The longtime vineyard manager took a job with Mudd Vineyards in 1977, at age 15, working to install some of the North Fork’s first vineyards. Now 55, he’s probably the youngest person among the first wave of Long Island wine growers still working in the business.

He recalled the energy and enthusiasm in the region after the Hargraves planted the first commercial grapes in Cutchogue in 1973.

“We started grafting grapevines and that’s what drew me in,” he said during an early June interview. “It was magnetic.” (more…)

If you quickly glance at this week’s “Wine of the Week,” Roanoke Vineyards 2016 Rosé of Cabernet Franc, you might think it a white wine — it’s that light in its copper tint.

On that color, Roanoke Vineyards’ Scott Sandell told me in an email, “Visuals are important, but we didn’t shape this wine around them. It’s not dyed or otherwise altered for good looks. He’s right. It’s light on color but not on flavor. (more…)

It’s spring on the North Fork. The air is fresh and the great outdoors is calling.

We asked Long Island food and wine pros what they will be drinking this season. This is what they said.

The catch? Winemakers cannot pick their own brands.

Dan Farrell considers himself a born teacher. So it makes sense that the retired school psychologist, who has worked part-time as a pourer at Roanoke Vineyards in Riverhead since 2012, decided to broaden his wine knowledge two years ago by becoming a certified sommelier.

“Life is an ongoing educational process,” Farrell, 59, said in a recent interview at the members-only vineyard’s public location, a tasting room and wine bar on Love Lane in Mattituck. “I just enjoy talking to people about wine.” (more…)
