This week’s “Wine of the Week,” Mattebella Vineyards 2016 Rose ($21) found its way into my glass via my wife. She recently went wine tasting to celebrate a friend’s birthday and brought it home among an armful of other bottles. She enjoys finding delicious local wines that I maybe haven’t had in awhile. They sit on mantelpieces and countertops and atop wine racks scattered across Suffolk County.
The wine bottles’ corks remain covered beneath layers of maroon wax; lift them up and the swishing cabernet and merlot is still sealed safely inside. The labels all bear the distinctive vines of Hargrave Vineyard’s earliest vintages, labels that are now peeling from decades of age. (more…)

On June 22, I spent a glorious afternoon at Mattebella Vineyards in Southold and, seeing the joy that its owners, Mark and Christine Ferrari Tobin, took in their country estate, I felt — as I had for the many years I spent working outdoors in my own vineyard — exhilaration with the wondrously changing seasons.
