Empire State Cellars, the all New York wine, beer, cider and spirits superstore that opened in 2011, will close at the end of next week.

The store’s concept is one that I think has merit and potential, but no one has gotten it quite right yet. Stores like this have either been poorly staffed, poorly placed, too large or run by individual wineries, which often leads to poor selections. (more…)

After opening up shop in Tanger Outlets in Riverhead three years ago, Empire State Cellars — which eventually became the retail location for Peconic Bay Winery and sold exclusively New York State-manufactured wine, beer and spirits — will close at the end of the year.

Tanger General Manager Janine Nebons said on Thursday that ESC’s lease is set to expire at the end of December.

Empire State Cellars is hosting a special tasting this weekend featuring Long Island wines from the year 1995.

The evening’s tasting menu includes Pellegrini Encore, Pellegrini Cabernet Sauvignon, Paumanok Grand Vintage Cabernet Sauvignon, Osprey’s Dominion Merlot, and several more local vinos. (more…)

It’s been a good year for North Fork Chocolate Company so far, and the fall looks even brighter. This month, the Calverton-based artisanal sweets manufacturer will launch its first retail operation out of the main food court at Tanger Outlets in Riverhead.

“We’re very excited and happy to do something local for the community,” said owner Ann Corley. “It’s a new niche. There’s nothing like it here at the food court.” (more…)
