That appears to be Riverhead’s motto when it comes to craft breweries, as the town welcomes its fifth beer maker to the fold.

That’s right: Mark your calendars because Riverhead’s second annual SantaCon Pub Crawl is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 5.

It’s harvest time on the North Fork. And while that means produce like fruits, vegetables and wine grapes are ripe for the picking, it’s also time to reap fresh hops for beer making.

This time of year is when local breweries make beers using the “wet hop” method. The process involves taking hops fresh off the bine (that’s what hop vines are called) and using them within 24 hours of being picked. (more…)

As we pull out of the parking lot, the wind whips my hair, the radio cranks Quiet Riot’s “Come on Feel the Noise” and cars slow down to gawk as we reach our maximum pedaling speed — a whopping three miles an hour.

Whoever said “It’s not the destination, but the journey” probably had Brew Crew Cycles, two 14-seat bicycles that tour Riverhead’s breweries, in mind. The bikes would be a great way to meander around Riverhead, even if you’re not headed to a brewery. But more on the destinations in a bit. (more…)

Riverhead’s Crooked Ladder Brewing Co. will soon increase the volume of ales, stouts and porters flowing out of the downtown brewery nearly two-fold, the latest sign of the flourishing local craft beer market.
