In her new novel, TAKE WING AND FLY HERE, award-winning filmmaker Priyanka Kumar captures both the intense competition and stark beauty of the world of birding. The event is free and open to the public. Kumar will discuss how she came to birding and how it has influenced her writing, photography, and filmmaking, and also how her interest in native plants and bird life have evolved together. ABOUT PRIYANKA KUMAR
Priyanka Kumar is the award-winning writer, director and producer of the feature documentary The Song of the Little Road, about Satyajit Ray, and starring Martin Scorsese, Ismail Merchant, and Ravi Shankar. Kumar’s awards include the New Mexico/New Visions Governor’s award, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Award, and an Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences fellowship. She has taught filmmaking at UC Santa Cruz. She lives in Santa Fe.
TAKE WING AND FLY HERE is the first book in Kumar’s New West Trilogy, which explores our changing relationship with the outdoors in the American West. Set in Southern California, the novel tells the story of JK, a PhD candidate in physics whose life begins to unravel after he takes on the challenge of a Big Year – how many different birds can he find in 365 days? JK’s main competitor is the president of the oldest birding society in America, which is facing bankruptcy in its Centennial year. Its members are eager to participate in special outings and feel the thrill of seeing rare birds in the wild, but they shy away from the responsibility of the mundane tasks needed to keep the group going – fundraising, finding new members, and upholding the society’s dedication to nature conservation.
