It’s rare that a sixth-grade science fair project predicts one’s career, but that was the case for Jacqueline Malenda, proprietor of Madiran the Wine Bar in East Setauket. While her classmates were growing sugar crystals and measuring electrical currents, Malenda made wine with grapes from the supermarket.

With her parents’ help, she made that single bottle of 8 percent alcohol-by-volume wine using household items like a potato masher, cheesecloth, pitchers and a funnel.

“After making a presentation at the science fair, I came home with the blue ribbon. And the faculty drank my bottle!” (more…)

Most any story written about the current state of Long Island beer today mentions the proliferation of small new breweries on Long Island. There really are a lot of breweries on Long Island now. Some are on the bigger side — think Great South Bay Brewery or Greenport Harbor Brewing Company. But most of the new kids on the block are far smaller.

Ready. Set. Register!

It might not have the same ring as ‘go!’ but the gates are now open to sign up for the inaugural Suffolk County Marathon, slated to kick off in nine months at East Islip’s Heckscher State Park.

Scheduled for Sept. 13, this leaves you plenty of time to train for the race, which also has a half-marathon option. (more…)

Downtown Patchogue ain’t what it used to be.

Having not been to the village for dinner in more than a year, I was surprised when on a recent Wednesday night I had trouble locating a parking spot and found myself on a 20-minute wait list at the recently opened dining hotspot “That Meetball Place.” (more…)
