Check off your environmentally friendly good deed this Earth Day by helping to plant a community rain garden in downtown Riverhead.
The Peconic Estuary Program and Riverhead Town will sponsor the event on the Peconic Riverfront at 10 a.m. on Earth Day, April 23. Volunteers are needed to help plant the garden along a strip of land located between Heidi Behr Way and the Peconic Riverfront parking lot. The first two floors didn’t count in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Climb to the Top fundraiser Feb. 28 at Rockefeller Center.
We traveled up escalators as my fellow participants and I remarked how excited we were to climb 66 flights of stairs with friends and family. Waiting for my turn reminded me of Space Mountain at Walt Disney World. During the slow, upward crawl, moments before reaching the peak, I asked myself, “Can I really do this?” (more…)

It took more than a year of planning and six months of construction, but a new — and in true North Fork spirit, locally crafted — menorah will grace Mitchell Park this December in celebration of Hanukkah.
Congregation Tifereth Israel of Greenport has commissioned former Greenport Mayor David Nyce, an artisan furniture maker by trade, to create the holiday symbol to replace the temple’s aging menorah. Nyce has volunteered his time, while the synagogue will pick up the materials cost. (more…)

Take a walk for a good cause and then go shopping.
This Sunday, Sept. 27, marks the 17th annual Tanger 5K Walk at Tanger Outlets in Riverhead, which benefits the North Fork Breast Health Coalition.
The North Fork Breast Health Coaltion works toward the prevention and early intervention of breast cancer, as well as finding a cure. Because it’s a not-for-profit organization, there are no employees, so all funds raised go directly to those diagnosed with breast cancer on the North Fork.
Money raised from Sunday’s 5K walk at Tanger Outlets will go to programs such as “Lend a Helping Hand,” which provides grants to North Fork breast cancer patients.
This year’s walk will also honor the memory of North Fork Breast Health Coalition president Pearl Philindas, who died Aug. 7, 2014 at age 72.
The 17th annual Tanger 5K Walk kicks off Sunday morning at Tanger Outlets, located at 200 Tanger Mall Drive in Riverhead.
A continental breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. and the walk will begin at 9 a.m. There will be T-shirt giveaways, raffles, prizes and more. Walkers should be finished in time to start shopping at Tanger Outlets with a 25% off PINK card by 10 a.m. Participants must be 13 and over.
