The first indoor farmers market in Greenport drew big crowds for its opening day Saturday. Patrons didn’t need to brave the brisk temperatures as they headed inside the new farmers market building at 414 First Street, occasionally referred to locally as “the ice house.”

Roughly 20 vendors were on hand selling locally grown or made provisions and products. Some businesses included Catapano Farms, Suhru Wines and Alice’s Fish Market along with North Fork Specialty Kitchen, Modern Primal Soap Co., Talk Treats To Me, and more.

The North Fork Animal Welfare League was also at the market Saturday.

The Greenport Farmers Market announced in October that it would be opening in an indoor space for the first time this fall. It previously only operated outdoors during warm-weather months. The goal is to give local farmers and community artisans an opportunity to sell their goods throughout the year, said Greenport Farmers Market president Dorothy Catapano.

“The village has been incredibly supportive, the community has been supportive,” Catapano said Saturday. “I think it’s going well.  A lot of people seem really excited that we’re here, and we want people to come and shop. We’re here all winter long.”

The indoor market runs on Saturdays  from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays 11 a.m. to 3p.m. through April 28.
