From parades to parties to a coffin race, there are plenty of ways to celebrate the spookiest day of the year. Here are 13 ways — yeah that scary number — to get into the Halloween spirit on the North Fork.

Coffin Race

Editor’s note: this event has been cancelled this year. Folks will be racing homemade cardboard coffins at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27.  The coffin races have teams of four costume-wearing “pallbearers” push a makeshift coffin, while the fifth member of the team pretends to be the deceased. Grand Halloween parade in Riverhead

A $500 grand prize for originality will be on the line at the annual costume parade at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28 due to rain forecasted for Saturday. If you would like to participate, be sure to submit your application by Oct. 25. Stop by Blue Duck Bakery Cafe or the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce to pick up application forms or visit halloweenfestriverhead.com to learn how to register online.


Jack O’Lantern Walk

Editor’s note: The threat of rain has changed the scheduling of this event. More information:  halloweenfestriverhead.comBring your carved pumpkin to Main Street to the Girl Scout Reception Table located by the East End Arts entrance for the Jack O’Lantern Walk on Saturday, Oct. 27. Would you rather bring a painted pumpkin? You can drop those off too. Return that evening to see the bulbs aglow at the Jack O’Lantern Walk.


Fun at the aquarium

The Long Island Aquarium will host a masquerade ball for adults at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. Early that day, it will offer half-price admission for children in costume at its “Bats, Barnacles and Broomsticks” event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit longislandaquarium.com for more information or to buy tickets.


The Rocky Horror Picture Show

The Suffolk Theater will get into the act with a screening of the ’70s classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26. Visit suffolktheater.com to buy tickets.


Party at Pace’s Dockside

Pace’s Dockside in Mattituck will host a Halloween party Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. Music will be provided by That Motown Band. A $10 cover gains you access to the two-hour buffet. There will be a costume contest with other food and drink specials. Visit pacesdockside.com for more information.


Greenport Harbor Brewing Halloween

Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. is celebrating Halloween at its Peconic location. The annual Halloween bash is set for Saturday, Oct. 27, from 7 to 11 p.m. There will be a live DJ, special brews and bites, a costume contest and more. Greenport Halloween parade

The annual Greenport Halloween parade returns Saturday, Oct. 27 at 10 a.m. It starts at Floyd Memorial Library and ends at Mitchell Park. There is no costume contest this year but kids of all ages (and their four-legged friends) can enjoy fun activities including a haunted maze, pumpkin painting, free carousel rides, an agility course for dogs  in the park afterward.


Haunted Halloween Cruise

Cruise to Long Beach Bar “Bug” Lighthouse to enjoy wine and cheese, hear lighthouse ghost stories, participate in a costume contest and explore this iconic North Fork landmark. The tour is Sunday, Oct. 28 from 4 until 6 p.m. Visit eastendseaport.org to purchase tickets.


Monster Mac Party at First & South

Wear your best monster costume for a chance to win a Beach Cruiser from Fire Island Bicycle Company during the Monster Mac Party at First & South on Friday, Oct. 26. The evening includes the monster theme costume contest, a DJ and bobbing for apples, but the best part just might be the epic main course. The Greenport restaurant is making mac n cheese five different ways in huge Parmesan cheese wheels. Visit firstandsouth.com.


Halloween tales of horror at the Custer Institute

This Halloween come hear the macabre works of Edgar Allan Poe at Custer Observatory on Saturday, Oct. 27. Poe readings will occur at 3 p.m. and again at 6 p.m. There will be spooky music, safe trick-or-treating, haunted Observatory tours and stargazing (at nightfall) after the readings. Suggested donation: $10 adults, children under 12 free. Long Ireland’s 4th annual Halloween Costume Party

Celebrate the holiday with Long Ireland Beer Company on Friday, Oct. 26, from 7 to 11 p.m.There will be live music by “Beer Money,” food available for purchase and, of course, plenty of beer. Tickets are $25 per person and include admission and two beer tickets. Costumes are required and there will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes awarded to the best ensembles. Costumes are required so it is time to get creative. Tickets can be purchased inside the Pulaski Street brewery in Riverhead or by calling (631) 403-4303.


Halloween karaoke party at Lucharitos

Put on a show with karaoke and a costume contest at Lucharitos in Greenport. Dress for a Disney theme costume contest for a chance to win a $500 prize. The party starts at 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27.
