The start of fall means many things to many people. Some are already on their seventeenth pumpkin spice latte. Others are bemoaning the unofficial end of summer. I am contemplating my loss of Sundays.
Sundays in September mean one thing only in my household: the official start of football season. I manage to steer my fiancé away from pre-season games for the most part when August rolls around. There are too few summer weekends to enjoy out and about and even he agrees it is better spent away from the TV.
Like clockwork on his birthday — Aug. 26 — his fellow football fanatics (we called them friends) are ready to plan their fantasy football league and hours worth of research commences. It is a taste of what I get on every Sunday until at least the Giants are out of the playoffs. (Here’s looking at you, January).
I could look at fall as the start of football and the subsequent loss of adventuring away from the TV with fiancé on Sundays — or I could look at it as time I can take for myself. Catching up on books, brunching with friends, using the credit card to shop for vintage décor (Hey, he won’t realize until the Giants are toast anyway).
I will spend a part of my Sundays cooking chili and wings — treats synonymous with football that we can all get behind — but you’ll never catch me with a pumpkin-spiced anything.
• If you share my mindset, you’ll make the most of this coming Thursday (9/13) when Blast for CAST returns for its second year. There’s an open bar, abundant hors d’oeuvres and 1943 pizza, live music and a fantastic silent auction. It’s all to benefit a worthy cause.
• The fifth annual Great Peconic Race is Saturday. Paddlers will circumnavigate Shelter Island in a 19-mile course. Proceeds from this year’s race will go to The Nature Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve and its children’s water education program.
• If you ever wanted to see the inside of the Entenmann estate in Riverhead, here’s your chance.
• “Blue Bloods” actress Bridget Moynahan is in Greenport Thursday, Sept. 6 to receive a Certificate of Commendation in honor of her function as Ambassador for the Arts to the Village of Greenport. It is a part of a special VIP preview event for the third annual North Fork TV Fest that kicks off this weekend. Thursday’s event at Kon Tiki at The Gallery Hotel will feature cocktails, apps and stand up comedy. Northforker is hosting the opening night party for the festival at Greenport Harbor Brewery in Peconic Friday evening.
