At its essence a house is four walls and a roof. But a home is a place of living; a retreat to call your own. There’s pleasure in the customized extras — bonus spaces ripe with potential to transform a house into more than a home but an oasis.
From a custom-built wine cellar to a dreamy indoor/outdoor living room, these dream spaces dial up the luxe factor of everyday living on the North Fork.
Let nature shine
Light is paramount in a space that invites nature inside. Designer Paris Kostopoulos, of Paris K Interior Design in Manhattan, implemented this concept when he was charged with creating a living space that appears to be an extension of the outdoors.
The original floor plan of this Mattituck home offered access to the deck through two doors. The wall between, however, greatly impeded the water views.
Kostopoulos’ solution? He removed them. He restructured the lofty sloped ceiling with beams to support a system of Nanawall folding walls.
“Light was a driving factor of the decision to open the walls to the view that not only encompasses the beautiful Mattituck Inlet, but also the amazing sunsets that happen center stage at this location in the summer,” said Kostopoulos. “All this nature spectacle was hidden by walls. It would have been a missed opportunity to not create such a large viewing opening.”
Fit for a winery
The owners of this Mattituck home knew their priorities. Shortly after moving in, their goal of transforming this cavernous basement with 11-foot ceilings into a space with enviable amenities was underway. The to-do list also included adding a custom home movie theatre, but the wine cellar came first.
East End Wine Cellars in Jamesport realized the homeowners’ dreams of making the wine cellar a focal point of the recreational basement retreat. Bud Handel, principal at the company, designed the rich looking cellar entirely from mahogany — wine racks, cabinets, walls and trim included. Large thermo pane glass windows were added to showcase the craftsmanship and the bottle collection while protecting its contents. LED lighting was the final touch, enhancing the view from both inside and outside of the cellar.
Some dream spaces don’t require four walls at all. You don’t need them in space designed to enjoy creature comforts while overlooking a spacious yard and sprawling water views. This bonus blue stone patio with cultured stone walls in Mattituck is accessible through the lower level of stairs leading down from the upper level of the house. The patio is the definition of indoor/outdoor living with a comfy sofa and chairs, big screen TV and cozy fire pit.
“The space would be beautiful and unique on any property with its lovely stonework,” said listing agent Donielle Cardinale of Daniel Gale reality. Make it yours for $1,195,000. View the listing here.
