The taste of juicy watermelon and freshly picked sweet corn never seems farther away than in February.

But rest assured that even at the end of winter local farmers are preparing for the 2018 season and they’re relying on our help to deliver the farm-to-table produce we crave.

Community supported agriculture programs help local growers cover the cost of ordering seeds and planting prior to the high season and the revenue it reaps. CSA members subscribe to a season’s worth of produce months in advance.

Farmers benefit from the upfront investment while members are guaranteed a box of fruits and vegetables every week throughout the harvesting season — at a discounted rate from non-subscribers.

Small Farm Central, an organization dedicated to supporting local agriculture, has coined last Friday of February, CSA Day.

“We wouldn’t be able to farm without [CSAs],” said Anthony Panarello, of Natural Earth Farms in Calverton, which will be donating a CSA share to a local food pantry for very 10 sign-ups received today.

Sign up at one of these local farms offering a CSA program and spread the word using #CSADay.
