Cheese lovers rejoice.

The Village Cheese Shop in Mattituck is opening a “permanent pop-up” in Greenport Saturday. The offshoot of the Love Lane staple will operate from noon to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday during the winter within The Market on Front Street. The shop will sell select cheeses and meats, starting with a champagne toast and free samples at noon on its opening day.

“I jumped on the opportunity [to have a location in The Market],” said Village Cheese Shop owner Michael Affatato on Friday. “I had been eyeing a space in Greenport because of the neighborhood dynamic.”

The pop-up comes nearly five months after Affatato abandoned the concept of a second brick-and-mortar storefront in the village.

“Cheese retail doesn’t need a large space,” he said. “It needs to focus on inventory.”

The Market, which offers organic fare in its café and environmentally conscientious products on its store shelves, is a perfect hosting space for the Cheese Shop, according to Affatato, who said the pop-up fills a void in the cheese retail industry in Greenport.

The pop-up will be closed this Sunday, January 14, but will be open Friday-Sunday beginning next week.

The Market and pop-up is located at 44 Front Street in Greenport.
