One of our favorite sights in Greenport is the carousel at Mitchell Park. This Sunday, kids can ride this landmark for free.

The Village of Greenport, in the true spirit of the holidays, is allowing free rides to children 12 and under from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Sunday, Dec. 17. Adults can also ride for free to accompany children three and under.

There is a limit of two free rides per kid. It is normally $2 per ride.

The roughly century-old carousel was built around 1920 in North Tonawanda, N.Y. It was purchased by Grumman in Calverton, which used it for company picnics and community events. In 1995, the plant was closed, and Greenport — with the help of then-Mayor David Kapell — won a donation contest for the carousel.

It has moved about the village, but has been at its current location since Mitchell Park was formally dedicated in 2001.
