If you’ve seen the 2004 film “Sideways,” you no doubt remember the rage with which Paul Giammati’s character denounces merlot in a line that has reverberated across the U.S.
The scene has always been particularly annoying for those in the Long Island wine industry, where that variety of grape (arguably) reigns supreme.
Bloomberg magazine recently explored the impacts of the line in the movie and how finally more than a decade later the stigma is wearing off.
Appropriately, in a sidebar accompanying the piece, a pair of local bottles — from Bedell Cellars in Cutchogue and Paumanok Vineyards in Aquebogue — were listed among the merlots in the country.
Any lover of Long Island wine who has tried these bottles would find that claim hard to argue with.
