For Chris Conlan, co-owner of the Greenport location of Goldberg’s Famous Bagels, the response on customers’ faces as they walk through the door is exactly what he had hoped for.
“The customers are amazing,” he said. “Everybody is ecstatic that we’re here.”
The bagel chain has eight stores, including one in Mattituck and Riverhead. Conlan, who also owns the Mattituck location, announced in March that it would soon expand to Greenport.
There, the inside is bright and clean with turquoise-colored walls and seating available inside.
While the bagel store will offer its known classics like deli sandwiches, a variety of cream cheeses, salads and, of course, bagels, it has also added new options in Greenport, which is located on Third Street.
Unlike its other North Fork locations, Greenport Goldberg’s offers acai and pitaya bowls and will soon sell smoothies. Another new addition is nitro cold brew coffee by Rise Brewing Co.
The new café is housed in the building that was most recently home to a Meson Ole Mexican restaurant. Built in 1845, the building had been deteriorating until it was purchased and renovated by Shelter Island resident James Olinkiewicz. It was once the Burr Hotel and later the Sterlington Hotel, according to the 2003 book, “Greenport,” by Antonia Booth and Thomas Monsell
The bagel shop opened last Thursday and the first weekend was a busy one, Conlan said, adding that he’s seen the number of customers per day increase since then.
“We’re super stoked to be here,” he said while helping customers on a busy Monday afternoon. “We’re just taking it day by day and falling in love even more.”
