Browder’s Birds in Mattituck is now offering 100 percent wool heirloom whaler sweaters made from its flock of heritage Cotswold sheep.
Similar to fishermen’s sweaters but woven in different patterns, they’re available in royal navy, wolf gray and natural in men’s sizes extra small to extra large.
The sheep at Browder’s are sheered up to two times per year by the Yaphank-based Long Island Livestock Company. The wool is then milled, spun and dyed at Battenkill Fibers and Spinning in upstate Greenwich.
The sweaters were designed by Manhattan-based Stoll Knit Resource. Stoll Knit’s Carol Edwards, who also has a home on the North Fork, helped develop the design and iron out production details. It was a long decision-making process and it took an entire team to create the sweaters, Browder said.
“The food we sell is from our farm, so we wanted to take the wool from our sheep and sell something you can wear. These sweaters are an heirloom piece for your wardrobe,” she said. “The amount of time, effort and creativity that went into the process gives each sweater its own story. We even put a photo of the sheep on the tag.”
Browder described the sweaters as traditional, soft and warm. Since they’re made from 100 percent wool, you’ll need to wear a thin layer underneath to avoid itchiness. Browder’s husband and the farm’s co-owner, Chris, frequently wears his royal navy version, she added.
The sweaters cost $250 and can be ordered by visiting browdersbirds.com/pantry or by calling (631) 599-3394. They can also be picked up at the farm stand before Christmas. Please call ahead, as the farm stand is closed for the season.
Browder’s Birds also sells wool hats, gloves and scarves. You can find these items at the Riverhead Indoor Farmer’s Market on East Main Street in Riverhead on Saturdays throughout the winter season.
