Calling all pumpkin carvers!

This weekend is the second annual Pumpkin Patch Display, hosted by the Southold Historical Society.

Over the course of two evenings, Sunday, October 30 and Monday, October 31, people are invited to bring their carved jack-o’-lanterns to the organization’s Main Road headquarters for a fantastical Halloween display.

Volunteers will be on hand to receive the carved pumpkins during both afternoons. They will place the pumpkins all over the facility’s front lawn and other parts of the property, then light them using LED battery-operated candles. In the evening everyone is invited to return to see the historic complex ablaze with hundreds of illuminated jack-o’-lanterns.

“Last year was the first year and it went incredibly well, we had almost 200 pumpkins,” said Southold Historical Society Director Karen Lund-Rooney. “It was a beautiful display of creativity.”

This year the historical society decided to expand the event to two days as Halloween falls on a weekday.

“We’re going to do it on Sunday and Monday because we think people will be trick-or-treating most of Sunday and then Monday is Halloween,” Lund-Rooney said. “We want to make sure that people can come and see them.”

This is a free community event sponsored by the Southold Historical Society. All ages are invited to participate and donations are welcome.

“We resisted turning it into a contest,” Lund-Rooney said. “We really want to celebrate with everybody and just have everything displayed so we can enjoy them, rather than have it be a competition.”

Carved jack-o’-lanterns can be dropped off between 3 to 6 p.m. on both days, Sunday and Monday. On Sunday at 6 p.m., the pumpkins will be lit and stay illuminated throughout the evening into Monday night. Participants are encouraged to be as creative with their pumpkins as they want to be.

“We’re going to leave it wide open to people’s imaginations and Boy, were they ever creative last year,” Lund-Rooney said. “I can’t wait to see what they do this year.”

The Southold Historical Society Museum complex is located at 55200 Main Road in Southold. For more information call (631) 765-5500 or visit southoldhistoricalsociety.org.
