Help save sea turtles by participating in the 19th annual Run for the Ridley 5K in Riverhead on Saturday, October 22.

You can become a sponsor or a runner to help the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation prepare for the upcoming cooler months when sea turtles can become paralyzed by frigid sea water, a process also called cold stunned.

Runners and joggers of all ages, plus their dogs too, are invited to participate in the race, which starts on Main Street in Riverhead and finishes at McDermott Avenue. Check-in will begin at 8 a.m. and run until 9:30 a.m. at the easternmost end of the municipal parking lot adjacent to the Peconic River.

The cost to register is $25 now through Friday, October 21. On Saturday, the day of the race, registration will be $30. To register online go to itsyourrace.com and click on the green button in the upper right hand corner. To register by phone call (631) 617-5150. For more information email [email protected] or visit riverheadfoundation.org.

The Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle is the world’s most endangered sea turtle, according to National Geographic. The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation runs the New York State Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program and is the only organization authorized to work with this federally protected species.

When an injured or sick sea turtle washes up on a New York beach, members of the foundation are called in to rescue and hopefully rehabilitate it for a later release.

When you lace up your running shoes and participate in the race, you are helping to raise funds for the organization to continue its important mission.
