The dining room in First and South restaurant once again became a dance floor on Monday as dance instructor Blake Dowling returned for a new season of swing dancing lessons.

Continuing every Monday night through October and November, participants can learn West Coast Swing basics and beyond. All are welcome, whether you are taking your first lesson or improving on what you already know. You do not need a partner.

“We’re excited to get to the point in the year where we can bring the community together and host special activities in our dining room,” said First and South owner Sarah Phillips. “It’s fun to get together with locals and colleagues in this way.”

Phillips said that they are always trying to come up with creative ways to use the space and keep it alive in the off season. Diners can also enjoy a seasonal, eclectic American menu from new chef, Richard Hebson, who joined the restaurant in August.

The bar will be open from 4 p.m. on Monday and food is available to order throughout the evening. Go early to listen to music, watch or practice before class. Swing dancing is from 7 to 8 p.m. Social dancing and practice will follow until 10.

Lessons are $20 per person, which includes social dancing afterwards. Reservations are required to participate and can be made by emailing [email protected]. Social dancing does not require a reservation and is $5 per person to join.

West Coast Swing is a direct descendent of the Jitterbug and Lindy Hop. You can view this dance style and the instructor’s credentials at blakehobby.com.

First and South is located at 100 South Street in Greenport. (631) 333-2200
