Pumpkin picking might be synonymous with October on the North Fork, but there is so much more to do here during the fall.

Saturday, Oct. 1

The third annual Pour the Core hard cider festival at Peconic Bay Winery.

‘POUR THE CORE’ HARD CIDER FESTIVAL

The 21-and-over cider festival runs from noon to 4:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $45 and designated driver tickets are $12 when purchased in advance. Buy your tickets here. Prices do not include tax and fees.

At the Second Annual Potato Festival

LONG ISLAND POTATO FESTIVAL

The family-friendly Long Island Potato Festival kicks off at 11 a.m. Expect exhibitors, food trucks, live music, activities, seminars, an amateur potato salad competition, a mashed potato sculpting contest, a potato-peeling race and more.

Advance registration for the competitions is strongly recommended.

Tickets can be purchased on the event’s website for $20, plus tax and fees. Children 12 and under are free.

ROSH HASHANAH SERVICES

Attend a High Holy Days service at North Fork Reform Synagogue, which operates out of Cutchogue Presbyterian Church. There is a 1o a.m. Rosh Hashanah service that is specifically geared toward children and is open to all.

NORTH FORK COASTAL CLEANUP

Join Group For The East End at Dam Pond Preserve in East Marion for a coastal cleanup. Collected trash will be repurposed into sculptures of wildlife impacted by marine debris. GOLF OUTING

MID-WEEK HIKE

Take a stroll through the woods at Sound View Dunes Park, one of our favorite public spaces on the North Fork.

The unique park offers the best of two spectacular worlds — lovely vistas of Long Island Sound as well as peeks of interdunal swales, which are freshwater wetlands located between dunes.

The park is open to the public year round from dawn until dusk.

Sound View Dunes is located on Soundview Ave. in Southold, just west of Peconic Dunes Camp.

HARVEST DINNER PARTY

“FIRST DATE” AT NORTH FORK COMMUNITY THEATRE

LEARN ABOUT THE PLANTS AND ANIMALS OF PLUM ISLAND

New York Natural Heritage Program biologists have completed their field work and written findings on the first ever four-season biological inventory of the plants and animals on Plum Island.

Join Southold town Supervisor Scott Russell, Randy Parsons, Land Conservation Specialist with The Nature Conservancy on Long Island as Peconic Landing welcomes Matthew D. Schlesinger, Ph.D., Chief Zoologist from the New York Natural Heritage Program and lead scientist on the Plum Island inventory work.

The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Peconic Landing auditorium and is free.

FRANKI VALLI TUNES AT THE SUFFOLK THEATER

“Who Loves You: The Music of Franki Valli” comes to the Suffolk Theater. A quarter of young Broadway veterans will perform Franki Valli hits like “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Candy Girl” and “Ronnie.” Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for dinner and drinks and the show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person and can be purchased on the Suffolk Theater’s website, suffolktheater.com.

GABRIELSEN’S FALL FESTIVAL

The fall festival at Gabrielsen’s Country Plant farm features hay rides, train rides, bounce houses, farm animals, pumpkin picking, roasted corn and their greenhouse-grown shrubs, annuals and perennials.

Admission to Gabrielsen’s Country Farm Fall Festival is $5 for adults and $7.95 for children on both weekends and weekdays. Live music and hayrides are only available on weekends. The farm is open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. every day and the festival runs through Oct. 31.

Note that Gabrielsen’s has moved from its longtime Main Road location.
