If you prefer brown eggs to white, pasture-raised hens to factory-farmed chickens and tomatoes grown in Mattituck as opposed to those picked in California, then this is the event for you.

The North Fork Foodie Tour, now in its 10th year and scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 11, will once again include stops at 20 North Fork farms, wineries and food producers. The tour gives guests a behind-the-scenes look at small-scale farming and food and wine production.

Tickets, $25 per person, can be purchased at www.northforkreformsyngogue.org. Children under 12 are free and proceeds from the event benefit North Fork Reform Synagogue.

The tour is the only fundraiser for the Cutchogue synagogue and helps the congregation balance its budget. It also brings 500 visitors to the area who spend additional money purchasing fresh produce, wine and more.

“The vendors have gotten more and more into it year after year,” said Kay Freeman of Riverhead, a synagogue member and co-chair of the tour’s organizing committee. “The tours they give are more interesting and more in-depth to what we call the foodie tourists. We have tourists that come back every year. They tell us it just keeps getting better.”

Deep Roots Farm in Southold is a new tour stop this year, she said. Others, like the garden and livestock pastures at 8 Hands Farm in Cutchogue, have been participating for years.

“Educating the consumer is so important,” said 8 Hands Farm co-owner Carol Festa. “The Foodie Tour really allows us to spread the word about how farming can be done in alternative ways and how it can be more respectful of the animals and their instincts.”

In addition to the synagogue’s website, tickets can be purchased at Gallery M in Greenport, Complement the Chef in Southold, Mattituck Florist, Barth’s Pharmacy in Riverhead and on the South Fork at Southampton Books. Tickets may also be purchased by sending a letter to NFRS, P.O. Box 1625, Southold, NY 11971, or the day of the event at any Foodie Tour location.

Participating venues are 8 Hands Farm, Macari Wines, Browder’s Birds, Catapano Dairy Farm, Deep Roots Farm, Goodale Farms, Greenport Harbor Brewing Co., Shinn Estate Vineyards, Lavender By the Bay, Mar-Gene Farms, Koppert Cress, Krupski’s Pumpkin Farm, Peconic Land Trust’s Charnews Farm, North Fork Roasting Company, Sang Lee Farms, Satur Farms, Southold School Garden, Surrey Lane Vineyards, Ty Llwyd Farm and The Farm.
