Somehow we have been writing this column about lunch on the North Fork for more than two years and have never mentioned the North Fork Food Truck.

I don’t really have an answer as to why, considering it’s the best grab-and-go lunch spot — not only on the North Fork, but all of Suffolk County. Probably Long Island, too.

The food truck, which you can find in the parking lot at North Fork Table and Inn in Southold, offers items like hot dogs for $5.50 to $15 sirloin sandwiches to lobster rolls, which are market price.

It’s not exactly “cheap eats,” but it is hands down the best bang for your buck if you’re looking for something really, really good (you can read about why it’s so far above and beyond the competition in our 2014 profile on the business and its owners).

On a recent visit I ordered my go-to, the North Fork-style Berkshire Pulled Pork roll with the works (smoked jalapeño pickles, tomatillo poblano sauce and cheese). The sandwich is $11, but the add-ons cost extra.

I also ALWAYS order the fries ($4.50), which come in a generous enough portion to share with another person. The chipotle aioli dipping sauce is fantastic.

And I have never not capped my meal with one of Claudia Fleming’s cookies. For just $1.50, you get a flawless chocolate chip from the kitchen of a James Beard Award winner.

Sounds like a bargain to me.

North Fork Table and Inn co-owner Mary Mraz was recently stationed behind the counter and mentioned all the positive attention they have received after the New York Times published a rave review of the restaurant and its new chef, Stephan Bogardus, earlier this summer.

It comes as no surprise to most of us. If someone were only spending one day on the North Fork and needed a lunch recommendation, this would be it.

The food truck is now permanently located at the North Fork Table & Inn located at 57225 Main Road in Southold. It is currently open seven days a week from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
