The Market

You probably didn’t know this, but it’s “Meat Free Week” in the U.S., as well as the U.K. and Australia.

It’s a campaign to get people to think about eating less meat, whether for health, political or just personal reasons. It also encourages people to be more adventurous with food and hopefully try new vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.

If you’ve chosen to participate in Meat Free Week and are getting tired of eating salads, here are just a few of our favorite meat-free options on the North Fork.

Made with sliced grilled portobello mushrooms, melted mozzarella cheese and a house-made basil pesto on pressed tuscan bread, Love Lane Kitchen’s Portobello Sandwich is sure to please. The sandwich is also served with a side of greens for $12.50. Love Lane Kitchen is located at 240 Love Lane in Mattituck.

The Market

Along with a fresh juice bar, The Market in Greenport offers many healthy, organic and vegetarian dishes. One of them is the California Sandwich, made with melted muenster cheese, avocado, tomato, sprouts and canola mayo. It’s served on your choice of bread with a side of tortilla chips for $8.95. The Market is located at 44 Front Street.

For an affordable way to go meat-free, try Blue Duck Bakery’s Tomato and Mozzarella Panini. Served at Blue Duck Bakery Cafés in Greenport and Riverhead, they’re made with pesto and served on rustic sourdough bread for just $ 7.59. Blue Duck Bakery Café in Greenport is located at 130 Front Street and 309 East Main Street in Riverhead.

For something a bit more substantial try the spinach pie at Greek Bites Grill. Made with phyllo dough, scallions, onions, feta and egg, the pie is made in-house and comes with a Greek salad or soup and pita bread for $9.95. Greek Bites Grill is located at 10095 Main Road in Mattituck.

Mazi Riverhead

When it comes to dinner, vegetarian or meat-free options are even fewer. Try Mazi in Riverhead. They offer a sampler menu that can work as appetizers or if ordered several together as a meal. Some of their choices include falafel sliders with lettuce, tomato and tahini sauce for $7. The cold dip sampler is hummus, smoked eggplant, jalapeño feta, with grape leaves, olives and tomato on pita bread for $14.50. Mazi is located at 33 East Main Street in Riverhead.

For fine dining, Noah’s offers many delicious meatless options like their spring vegetable risotto with English peas, Sep’s asparagus, fava beans and a sweet pea puree for $24. Noah’s is located 136 Front Street in Greenport.
