Fourth of July fireworks, parades on the North Fork

Fourth of July weekend promises to be as busy as usual on the North Fork with plenty of activities for summer visitors.

But what about the events that celebrate Independence Day? Well, there’s plenty of those too, with parades and fireworks planned for the entire three-day weekend. 

Below is a list of holiday events in each community.

Greenport

The 43rd annual Greenport Fire Department carnival starts tonight, Thursday, June 30, and will continue through Monday, July 4, at the Polo Grounds on Moores Lane. Hours are 6 to 11 p.m. Fireworks begin at 10 p.m. Saturday, July 2, and Monday, the 4th. The carnival is sponsored by the fire department’s Phenix Hook & Ladder and Relief Hose companies. Orient

Fireworks are coming to Orient Yacht Club Saturday, July 2, at 9:15 p.m. Spectators can line up along the pier to watch the display, which will take place 1,000 feet offshore.

• The seventh annual Heritage Day parade and celebration hosted by Oysterponds Historical Society will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 3. The parade will start at the Village Lane Civil War monument. The Declaration of Independence will be read on the steps of the Old Point School House and the celebration will continue at Poquatuck Park, with music, games and food.

New Suffolk

The New Suffolk Civic Association will host a “very special” parade July 4, kicking off at 11 a.m. Participants include the Cutchogue Fire Department, U.S. Navy submariners and others. Meet at Tuthill and New Suffolk roads. A celebration and refreshments will follow.

Riverhead

• Riverhead Raceway will celebrate its 66th anniversary and the new owners’ first July 4 celebration on Saturday, July 2. Racing starts at 7 p.m., with a 66-lap NASCAR Modified feature event and demolition derby, and a fireworks display that starts at dusk. Visit riverheadraceway.com.

• The Riverhead Business Improvement District’s Independence Day celebration and fireworks kick off at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 3, on the downtown riverfront, with performances by Brady Rymer and the Little Band That Could as well as the Misspent Youth Band. In addition to the music, there will be American flag giveaways, face painters, stilt walkers, jugglers and balloon artists. Fireworks start at 9 p.m. Bring chairs. Southold
