Southold has seriously stepped up its lunch game in the past few years.

With the opening of North Fork Roasting Co. (now serving lunch) last year, the North Fork Food Truck becoming a fixture at North Fork Table & Inn and the overhaul of Southold Fish Market (to name a few tasty eateries), Southold just might have the best lunch options on the North Fork.

So The North Fork Shack, which is located on Route 48 and opened late last month, is in good company for those looking for a quick mid-day meal to go. That it has already drawn us in twice despite being open for little more than a week is a vote of confidence for its fresh local offerings.

During two recent visits, the standout was the pulled lamb served on a pita with cucumber yogurt sauce, charmoula and pickled vegetables ($12.95.) The sides at North Fork Shack are reasonably priced as well, so we’d recommend pairing the lamb with some shallot-dusted french fries ($3.75) or an 8-ounce clam chowder ($3).

The lamb is moist and flavorful, but the taste of fresh cucumber in the accompanying sauce is what makes it extra special in our opinion. All too often this white sauce tastes nothing like actual cucumbers.

The dish is an obvious nod to the Moroccan heritage of co-owner Samy Sabil, but you can read more about the restaurant and its owners’ origins here.

North Fork Shack is open Wednesdays through Sundays for lunch and dinner and is located at 41150 Route 48 in Southold. Reach them at (631) 876-5566.
