Four and Twenty Blackbirds

The Orient outpost of a Brooklyn bakery known for making pies that mix the sweet with the savory will be open for a third season on Village Lane this summer.

Four and Twenty Blackbirds will be open Saturdays and Sundays beginning May 14 and will expand its schedule July 1, according to manager Toby Bannister.

“It was a really great season last year,” Bannister said. “It’s amazing how word of mouth works because people continue to find us.”

The Orient store, a satellite of the flagship Brooklyn location, will once again feature whole pies, pies by the slice and coffee from Stumptown Coffee Roasters.

Expect muffins, scones, homemade granola and breads for customers to enjoy with their morning coffee. The café will also offer savory treats called hand pies made with ingredients like butternut squash and cauliflower, which Bannister called “yummy.”

Owner Emily Elsen, who along with her sister and co-owner Melissa wrote the cookbook “The Four & Twenty Blackbirds Pie Book, Uncommon Recipes From the Celebrated Brooklyn Pie Shop,” and her crew bake the pies in a 3,000-square-foot commercial kitchen in Gowanus. The tasty confections will be delivered to the North Fork several times a week, Bannister said.

Four and Twenty also plans to serve ice cream treats and frozen fruit pops from Lanewyorkina.

“We cater to people who miss the ice cream shop,” Bannister said, referring to the space’s previous incarnation.

The pie shops will also again feature art works in a back room space dubbed “Mr. Gallery” that debuted last year.

Four and Twenty Blackbirds wills be open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Find them at 1010 Village Lane in Orient, (347) 940-6717.
