You know that North Fork summer is near when Harbes, one of the region’s most family-friendly farms and certainly one of its biggest attractions, opens for the season.

Harbes Family Farm and Vineyard in Mattituck will reopen for the 2016 season on Friday, May 6. The “Barnyard Adventure” section, featuring live animals and playgrounds, will be open and the farm stand will sell plants, flowers, herbs and potting material. The Harbes Vineyard tasting room will also be open.

Then on Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8 Harbes will host a special Mother’s Day weekend festival.

We can almost taste the strawberry lemonade and homemade apple cider doughnuts, now.

There will be outdoor activities to enjoy all weekend long (weather permitting), including flower pot planting for Mom, live music, wine tastings, pig races, singing hayrides, games and much more.

From hayrides and barnyard animals, to vineyards and wine tasting, then corn mazes, pumpkin and apple picking in the fall, fun agricultural activities take place here. The Harbes family has been farming on the East End for 13 generations and now features three locations (Mattituck, Jamesport and Riverhead) to visit.

This year marks their 26th as a retail farm.

“It’s very exciting,” said general manager David Harbes. “There’s people who’ve been coming year after year and to see them here with their kids, still enjoying the activities together is pretty special.”

Hours for Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. General admission to the Barnyard Adventure is $7.95 on weekdays, $12.95 on weekends. Admission for seniors is $6.95 on weekdays and $10.95 on weekends.

There is no fee to visit the farm stand or tasting room.
