Not many people would associate the Southold Historical Society with high fashion, but it was last Friday when Accessories Magazine shot its fall cover at the Main Road campus.
Accessories Magazine is a trade magazine for people in the fashion industry. It forecasts fashion trends for the future to help clothing shops and department stores know what merchandise to order for their stores.
The decision to shoot at the historical society came when the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Lauren Parker, who just bought a house in Southold, happened to drive by.
“We have a house on Town Harbor Lane and we were driving by when I saw this whole set up,” said Parker. “I thought this would be perfect. The theme of this shoot is modern heritage. There’s a lot of English tweeds and English country, but done in an edgy way,” said Parker. “There’s a lot of vintage jewelry, rings piled on and pins, so we’re having fun with it.”
The team decided to shoot outside the historical society’s expansive barn, taking advantage of the building’s rich wood tones, as well as the other buildings that populate the property.
The shoot started out well, but soon overcast clouds sent the team inside for part of the day. Indoors, they had commandeered the living room of the Ann Curie-Bell house, turning it into a dressing room, as stylist Sandy Armeni, trends director Courtney Ignelzi, and hairdresser Sylvia Pichler helped get model Ulla Reiss ready for the next shot.
The historical society’s office assistant, Walter Jackson, was there to keep an eye things and wasn’t bothered at all by the fashion team setting up shop inside the historical house.
“Somebody has to be on premises if we open the building, but it’s great to use the facility for all kinds of things,” said Jackson. “It’s here, lets use it for everything we can — shoots, weddings, whatever.”
By mid-afternoon the sun had returned and shooting continued outside the barn.
“There’s so much history and heritage out here,” Parker exclaimed. “I want to get more involved in the community, because this is really interesting.”
