Imagine a sea of glowing Jack-O-Lanterns, all carved by different members of the community, standing side-by-side on Halloween Night.

It’s happening this Halloween at the Southold Historical Society grounds for the organization’s first “Pumpkin Patch” event.

Everyone is invited to drop off their carved jack-o’-lanterns at the complex located at 55200 Main Road in Southold between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31. Volunteers will be on hand to help place the jack-o’-lanterns on the front lawn and light them using LED battery-operated candles, according to a press release from the Southold Historical Society.

Historical society trustee David Daly said the inspiration for the event stemmed from a similar annual event at Abingdon Square in New York City’s West Village. That event allows New Yorkers, many of which likely don’t have stoops, a place to display their carved creations.

“It brings hundreds, if not thousands, of pumpkins to this little park,” Daly said. “I thought this would be a great opportunity for people to share their hard work and art with the community.”

Daly said the historical society is prepared to brighten the night with 200 LED lights, though if more participants show up, volunteers can purchase additional lighting.

There will be treats for trick-or-treaters in costume and hot cider will be available for the adults. The historical society hopes to continue the event in the future, making it a must-stop for North Forkers every Halloween.

The pumpkins will remain on display throughout the weekend, Daly said.

There is no cost to attend this event, but donations and new memberships applications are welcome.

“We like any opportunity to get families and young people involved with the historical society,” Daly said. “It’ll be a good place to stop by on your way around town.”
