Grapes ripening at Clovis Point. (Credit: Vera Chinese photos)

It seems like  just last week we reported that the buds had broken and the 2015 vintage is underway.

Now the grapes that will become bottles of delicious Long Island cabernet franc and merlot are already turning from green to deep purple. That process is known as veraison and is the first sign of ripening.

We spotted this scene at about 9 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 30 at Clovis Point in Jamepsort. The early morning effect created a lovely glow around the dark grapes.

The first of the North Fork’s grapes — usually those used to make sparkling wine — will be harvested in early September.
