Robin Newman wants young readers to chase down clues and solve the mystery of a lost dessert with the characters of her new book, “A Wilcox and Griswold Mystery: The Case of the Missing Carrot Cake” (Creston Books, 2015).

The early chapter book follows two mouse detectives who call themselves “MFIs,” or Missing Food Investigators, and work from a shoebox on Ed’s farm in the hunt for that titular piece of cake.

Newman, who is a Manhattanite and Orient weekender, said that the libraries of the East End have helped influence her in her writing career.

“I love the libraries on the North Fork,” said Newman, an attorney turned children’s author. “The children’s sections are warm and inviting, and they have incredible free programs.”

Newman, who lives with her husband and son, said that she was inspired to write “Cake when she realized her nieces and nephews would appreciate more meaningful Christmas presents — books written just for them.

“I started to think, wouldn’t it be fun if the detectives, the enforcers of justice, were the smallest animals on a farm?” she said. “Hence the creation of the Missing Food Investigators and The Case of the Missing Carrot Cake.

In addition, Newman said she found inspiration for one of her forthcoming books, Hildie Bitterpickles Needs Her Sleep, while living on the East End.

“My neighbor has a witch weathervane, and while I was staring at it, I kept thinking, what if there was a witch with some neighbor relation problems? And what if she had to hire a real estate agent to help her find a new house because her neighbors were driving her crazy?”

Hildie Bitterpickles Needs Her Sleep will make its debut in spring 2016.

Newman will host two author events in Greenport this August. The first will be at the Floyd Memorial Library on Aug. 4th and the second will be held at Burton’s Bookstoreon Aug. 8th.
