As you approach the entrance of Hallock’s Cider Mill in Laurel, the air becomes sweeter with the scent of freshly prepared pies cooling, soups simmering and breads baking, among other homemade treats.

Marianne and Wayne Hallock opened their bakery for the season on Wednesday and said they’re looking forward to catching up with their regular customers, as well as meeting new visitors.

The Hallocks say they’re having fun preparing the bakery’s traditional staples, including the gluten-free soups like clam chowder, gourmet cookies, pies and breads.

“The best kind is the one you’re eating, as they say,” Wayne said when asked which dish was his favorite.

Pre-made and custom-made gift baskets are returning after a successful launch last year and the couple is also preparing for a busy wedding season with plans to make lots of homemade gifts like mini apple pies.

Be on the lookout for the bakery’s key lime pie pops later this year, too.

The Modern Snack Bar in Aquebogue opened April 14, which marks its 65th season.

John Wittmeier, who owns the restaurant with his brother, Otto, said highlights of the current menu include:
bay scallops, a prime rib special and BBQ spare ribs, as well as local favorites like roast Long Island duck, lobster salad and lemon meringue pie.

New to the menu this year as a result of customer demand is a veggie burger on a toasted multigrain roll and sliced avocado.

“My brother and I are very happy to be back,” he said. “We’re seeing familiar faces. They’re sharing stories about what they missed most over the winter and go right to their favorite. Each one has their own item a lot of the times.”

Also coming are the mojitos made freshly with mint John Wittmeier has grown.
