The key animator of the feature film ‘Walking Life’ juried East End Arts’ all-media exhibition called “The Cartoon” this week. Artist Matthew Langland of New York City met gallery director Jane Kirkwood at a small gallery show in New York. She asked him to be a juror and he accepted the assignment, which featured 100 entries, 40 of which were chosen for the exhibit.

“He had a wonderful good nature and spent a lot of time with the art work and gave some wonderful comments,” Kirkwood said. “I let him make his own guidelines for the show and we had a broad spectrum.”

In the end, she said that he felt the work should show a commitment to the artist’s idea of their piece.

In the juror’s comments, Mr. Langland wrote: “The pieces in this show range in character from whimsical and funny to mysterious and contemplative, from brazenly scathing to unabashedly ugly. Each offers an experience more substantive and affirming than one encounters in everyday life, something deeper than one expects when hearing the word ‘Cartoon.’”

A Meet the Artists opening reception for the show is Friday, April 24 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the East End Arts gallery in Riverhead at 133 E. Main Street. Refreshments will be served and it is open to the public. The show continues until June 12 on Tuesdays through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Best of Show was Julian Ansell of Riverhead's "Largely Ceremonial." The juror said, "His work showed a maturity of style."
