It has only been a month since winter began. But with temperatures hovering in the teens to low 20’s, it’s nice to duck inside Homeside Florist‘s greenhouse on Route 58 in Riverhead to see beautiful flowers, breathe in the oxygenated air and play with the resident three-year-old cat, Billy Ray.

Billy Ray was a rescue cat who earns his keep by ensuring the greenhouse stays pest free. He once caught six voles, a snake and a bird in one day, according to 30-year employee Adell Doscher.

Homeside just celebrated its 60th anniversary last August. It was founded by Ernest and Elaine Olsen, who still work in the business.
