We’re counting down the top coolest stories of 2014 on northforker.com. We will publish one story on our list per day, every day, until Jan. 1.

Coming in at number 3 are the high accolades Macari Vineyards received this year.

Take a sip of Macari Vineyards’ 2010 Cabernet Franc and it’s easy to see why the full-bodied, flavorful wine won “Best Red” in August at the annual New York Wine & Food Classic in Watkins Glen, N.Y.

Sample the rest of the Mattituck winery’s portfolio and it becomes immediately apparent why Macari was named “Winery of the Year” at the same competition.

“I got very emotional because it’s well-deserved for this amazing team,” Alexandra Macari, whose father-in-law, Joseph Sr., founded the vineyard, told us after winning the award.

The 2014 competition included 835 wines, 20 hard ciders and eight spirits from across New York State. The winners were chosen by 22 expert judges through blind tastings.

It’s the second time in two years a Long Island vineyard has taken home top honors. McCall Wines in Cutchogue won “Best in State” at last year’s competition.

“New York is home to some of the world’s finest wines, beers, spirits and ciders, an industry that supports thousands of jobs in all corners of this state and is an important partner to our agricultural and tourism sectors,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said after the event.
