Coming in at number 7 is Orange is the New Black filming in Riverhead.
Local fans of the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black” didn’t have to wait very long into the hit show’s second season to get their first on-screen glimpse of Riverhead. A scene filmed outside the Suffolk Theater in January appears 17 minutes into the season’s first episode, which was directed by Academy Award winner Jodie Foster. The episode, titled “Thirsty Bird,” began streaming June 6.
Foster, who frequently directs episodes of the show, was on set in January, though none of the series’ stars were spotted on Main Street.

The historic theater and its marquee -— minus the LED graphics — appear in a flashback scene. A teenage version of the show’s main character, Piper, sees a screening of the 1993 film “Dazed and Confused” at the movie house, which she and her mother refer to as “The Suffolk.”
Eagle-eyed viewers can spot signs for the Riverhead Farmers’ Market featuring eggs from Browder’s Birds.

At the 21:40 mark of the episode, scenes filmed at the Suffolk County Jail in Riverside begin. “Thirsty Bird” sparked renewed attention to a campaign by the New York Civil Liberties Union to improve conditions for inmates housed at the jail.
