If you do it right this weekend, everyone will think your outfit is ugly. Both Lucharitos in Greenport and Joe’s Garage and Grill are hosting ugly holiday sweater contests this weekend.

For their second annual “Holiday Con” party this Friday, Dec. 19 at 10:30 p.m. Lucharitos is encouraging guests to don ugly sweaters or dress up like Santa or any other holiday character. Their famous reindeer milk margarita will be the drink of night with plenty of other drinks specials to celebrate the season.

For its first Ugly Sweater Party Joe’s is offering specials on drinks and eats starting at 9:30 p.m. this Saturday, Dec. 20. Specials include half-priced appetizers, $3 pint specials, $7 big mug specials and $5 candy cane and Fireball shots.

A DJ who will be spinning all night will announce the winner for the ugly sweater contest. Word on the street is that the prize is “major” though we’re not quite sure what it is.

Here are some tips to up your odds.

Are you going to wear that? We all know one person who is perhaps a little too into the holiday spirit. They might have the sweater you’re looking for. Pro tip: bring over cookies, hot chocolate and give them your very best rendition of “Frosty the Snowman” before asking to borrow their worst sweater. After all he or she would be saving you money or time crafting your own outfit.

Hit the thrift shop. So your pal already has plans with her sweater. Fine. It’s time for plan B — shopping. As the Macklemore song “Thrift Shop” suggests, rocking hand-me-downs works on almost any occasion, but you can really score a second-hand gem for the ugly sweater contest. Bonus, you can find some cool, last minute gifts while you’re at it. There are plenty of local thrift stores that benefit charitable causes, too. We like Eastern Long Island Hospital’s Opportunity Shop in Greenport.

Get crafty. So maybe shopping five days before Christmas isn’t your thing. When all else fails, break out the glue gun and glitter because it’s time to get creative. Pull out an old sweater and get to work. There are no rules for this one. The more glitter, lights and garland, the closer you are to the grand prize.
