When it comes to fine dining on Long Island, two of the best-reviewed new restaurants are right here on the North Fork.

Newsday released its list of the 10 best reviewed eateries of 2014 which includes the Island’s first four-star Japanese restaurant and several upscale Italian dining spots.

It comes as no surprise to us at northforker that the following two North Fork restaurants have made the cut: Newsday food critic Peter M. Gianotti says that Petulant Wino in Aquebogue and Caci in Southold are 2014 standouts.

“Chef Marco Pellegrini and owners Anthony and Daniele Cacioppo have fashioned a dining destination, attuned to the seasons, spare in design and intricate in the kitchen,” Gianotti writes of Caci, which opened in September.

He recommends Pellegrini’s potato gnocchi with gorgonzola cheese, radicchio, walnuts and balsamic vinegar sauce which we have had and we must say that it is divine.

As for Petulant Wino, chef and restaurateur Tom Schaudel’s newest NoFo venture, Gianotti says “Polished and streamlined, Petulant Wino has a little glow, offers a lot of big flavors from chef Lenny Campanelli.”

The Aquebogue eatery, located in the 19th century farmhouse that formerly housed Comtesse Thérèse Bistro, opened its doors in June. Schaudel, who owns Petulant Wino with his daughter Courtney, also made the list for his Be-Ju Sashimi and Sushi bar in Melville.

Gianotti isn’t the only food critic to have taken note of the Main Road restaurant. The New York Times’ Joanne Starkey gave it an excellent rating, the tough-grading paper’s highest mark, in an August review.

We remind our readers that as Christmas approaches, a gift card to either of these eateries would make a fine gift. Especially if you have any northforker staffers on your list.
