Earning accolades from both Wine Enthusiast magazine and at this year’s New York State Wine & Food Classic, Sparkling Pointe’s 2005 Brut Seduction is northforker’s Wine of the Week.

Made by blending the best chardonnay and pinot noir grapes harvested from the Southold vineyard in 2005, the wine was aged eight years prior to its release in May.

To achieve the light, fruity sparkling wine the grapes were picked earlier than grapes used to create other wines, winemaker Giles Martin said. This is to capture the freshness of the grape, he said. Picking the grapes early also translate to a lower alcohol percentage during the original fermentation process. This is needed because the brut goes through a second fermentation process once it is bottled.

“If we have too much alcohol to start, we would end up with a heavy wine,” Martin said. “This way the wine ages well.”

Characterized by its sweet yet dry flavor and tiny bubbles that refresh your palate, the wine combines 57 percent pinot noir grapes and 43 percent chardonnay grapes. Containing toasted almonds, wild berry and flora aromas, the 2005 Brut Seduction pairs well with lobster with butter, foie gras, or a creamy mushroom risotto.

Despite being made primarily with red grapes the wine has a deep gold color. This is done through a special pressing process that eliminates the wine’s exposure to the red grape skin, Martin said.

“The idea is to just get the fruit,” he said.

Sparkling Pointe’s 2005 Brut Seduction was recently rated  91 points wine by Wine Enthusiast magazine and was named Best Sparkling Wine in New York State at the 2014 New York Wine & Food Classic.

The wine retails for $60 a bottle. Pick up a bottle at Sparkling Pointe located at 39750 County Road 48, Southold.
